So far winter sports at Palumbo are getting off to a pretty nice start with teams practicing to get prepared for the season. The boys basketball team has weeks of intensive training and two a days. They are expected to show up at 6:00 in the morning for an early practice session and then stay 2 hours after school as well. I think it’s safe to say they are persevering for the season. The boys basketball team has had a couple scrimmages so far, one of those scrimmages coming the day of the fall feast. They were told to get their food and roll out. The scrimmages have no official scores, so no one was declared winners or losers in their scrimmages. Rumor has it that everyone played amazing and an insider on the team, Laquan Preston informed me that journalism’s former own member, Waseem Talbert had a great scrimmage. The team is bringing in some new members with 2 new freshman guards and journalism’s own Marquez Cruz aka Quez Rules. The boys basketball seems to be on it’s way to a better season than last year, which if I say so myself is impressive. Cruz says he is ready to be the leader this team needs and will step up to the plate when needed (We’ll see). A recent setback for the team has been a hand injury to returning player Saeer Miller aka SaBuckets. It reportedly happened in an after school practice on the 3rd of December. He was in the hospital that night with a soft cast on and his mother by his side. I’m hearing barring a setback he will be able to return this season on the bright side of things.
On the other side of gender pertaining to basketball, the girls basketball team is practicing and scrimmaging too. The most recent scrimmage came against Paul Robeson and the team was very confident when interviewed in the lay up line before the game. With junior guard, Kiarah Henry otherwise known as Rooster saying, “We are about to fry them” and “It’s over with” well before the game even started ironically. Palumbo’s girls basketball teams has added two new tall girls to the team to hold down the lower block. Things are looking bright for the Lady Griffins who returned, all but one player from it’s heralded 2014-2015 team that went undefeated up until the playoffs. The Lady Griffins has some of the most heart and talent I’ve ever seen from a high school team on the floor, with essentially the core returning unchanged and with no injuries this year expect an even better year from them. The leaders of the team are point guards, Rooster and Taylor and forwards, Sleepy and Ariana Dos Santos. With a core like that, they are going to be scary for opposition, especially with the addition of two new freshman forwards that tower over most girls. I guess what this article is saying is Palumbo basketball is going to be the truth this year. Expect great things because I am.
