This year the School District of Philadelphia has given incoming freshmen five days to make their decisions. Many are trying to choose between Central, the Academy @ Palumbo, Bodine, and various other magnet schools. On Thursday, February 4th, Ms. Thompson, Ms. Donnelly's and Ms. Pray organized a pop up open house for those that were accepted to The Academy @ Palumbo. Unfortunately, we were not able to host 800 shadows in 5 days. This open house was meant to give incoming students a look at the daily life of a Griffin. The students were shown a video that gave them a glimpse into a day at the Academy @ Palumbo. Students and parents were also allowed to ask a panel of Palumbo students questions. These questions varied from, “what happens when you miss class for sports?” to “why Palumbo?”. The same question was asked multiple times, “why Palumbo over Central?” Ms. Thompson, our fearless leader, explained that Palumbo was modeled after Central. Some of our students explained the community aspect of Palumbo. Even though we have grown to almost 900 students, we still are able to be part of the Palumbo family, we still feel as if we are in a small school. We also had some time to brag about how amazing our teachers are here at Palumbo. Ms. Donnelly explained, " One of our physics teachers, Klint Kanopka, is amazing. I tell him all the time, ‘Klint, in a few years, you'll be the reason people are coming here.'" Palumbo is able to shine through this difficult time of being a school district of Philadelphia school, and we’re growing more and more every year. Our community aspect is one that can be matched by any other school, as well as our dedicated teachers and stellar students. Who knows, years from now incoming freshmen may be asking why Central over Palumbo.
