After taking a year off to see the world other than the screen and on tour, Ed Sheeran to the music industry. His concerns was that he has been all over the world but has not been able to see any of it. It seems to be the concern of all music artists. Maybe that is saying something about tour schedules. In order to cleanse himself of technology, Sheeran got rid of his cellular device only having a small prepaid phone for emergencies. The best way to get in contact with him was to email him. In an interview after his return, Sheeran talked about how he went out and saw the world. Actually saw it. When you are touring sometimes you might have a day off in the city of your choice but it is very hard to go enjoy yourself when you have thousands of fans tracking your every move. People forget, even me, that celebrities actually are people and they deserve the respect of any other person on the street. If you cannot go shopping in town because there is a mob of hundreds of thousands of people in front of your hotel is saying a lot. With his return to the music industry, he brought along with him not one but two new songs for our ear holes to enjoy with anyone and everyone or even no one all by yourself in your room at 2 am when you its just you and your thoughts and dropped the cover art and name of his 2017 album ‘Divide’ which is 3rd in line after his two other math related albums ‘Plus’ and ‘Multiply’. The first song he released is ‘Shape of You’. This is a very sexy song where he is talking to a girl telling her that he is in love with her body and the shape of it. This song can be empowering to females because Ed Sheeran is known for appreciating the female body, all shapes and sizes. This song tells girls that anyone can love their just as much as they should love their own body. The next song is my personal favorite of the two, ‘Castle on the Hill’. In this song Ed talks of the old’n days where he would have a fun time with his group of friends and how they have shaped him into the person he is today. He also tells of the hardship that they are/were going through but assures that they are still the great people he grew up with. It it pretty amazing how he shares a part of his ‘lovely’ childhood with the world. Talking of how one of his friends are on their 2nd wife or how one lives alone with 2 kids or how one had a brother that overdosed shows how he takes these life lessons and apply it to his own life. Ed Sheeran is known for pulling on everyone’s heart strings. With his soulful ballads to his uppity beat songs he can put anyone in a good mood at anytime of the day.I myself am a big fan of his and can not wait to hear his new album and everything else he has set for the world.
What's up on the charts? Well this week we are focusing on 5 songs up on the charts this week. Though my music library is mainly on Spotify, I will be using the Billboard Music charts since they are more official and take numbers from all over not just one place which will give me a clear picture of who is on top. All songs are number one in their genre this week. The genres I will be covering this week are rock pop hip hop country and soundtracks.
Number one in rock this week is…….Heathens by Twenty One Pilots. “Heathens” starts off slowly with Tyler Joseph (the lead singer for Twenty One Pilots) basically crooning the chorus. He sings, “All my friend are heathens; take it slow.” Heathens can mean a lot of different things. Right here, it could refer to people on the outside of a specific group (like Twenty One Pilots’ core fan base, the clique), people who we think are morally weaker than us, or people who we don’t understand or think are odd.Tyler explains here that all of his friends are “heathens,” suggesting that he feels camaraderie with them because he too can be considered a heathen. This song made it onto the soundtrack of the movie “Suicide Squad” and has won a MTV Music Award for Best Rock Video. I am a big fan of Twenty One Pilots and I am at no surprise that it is still up on the charts for 25 weeks.
Number one in the pop genre this week is….. Bad things by Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello. This joint single between rapper Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello from Fifth Harmony is about a sexually charged relationship between a good girl and a guy from the wrong side of the tracks. Cabello sings about her feelings for her bad boy lover while MGK tells her about the dark but pleasurable things he will do to her. This song is the second single from Camila Cabello. “Nothing's that bad If it feels good So you come back Like I knew you would And we're both wild And the night's young” these lyrics show the conflict throughout the song as the people from two different worlds want to each even though they have so many differences.
Number one song in the hip hop genre is….. Black Beatles by Rae Sremmurd Featuring Gucci Mane. This song has been on the charts for 12 weeks. It has become popular by the social media trend “The Mannequin Challenge”. The most notable lyric of the song is “That girl is a real crowd pleaser Small world, all her friends know of me Young bull livin' like an old geezer”. “Black Beatles” is a collaborative song by Rae Sremmurd, Swae Lee, Slim Jxmmi, Gucci Mane and producer-Mike Will Made-It. The song is basically comparing themselves to the late-great band ‘The Beatles’-mostly the comparison runs in the lines of the fame and fortune of climbing to the zenith of the music business. Angel Rogers,a student at Academy @ Palumbo, says “the song is stupid but it's very catchy”
The number one song in country this week is…… Blue Ain't Your Color by Keith Urban. “Blue Ain't Your Color” is a smooth ballad that hits you right in the heart strings. My favorite part of the song is the chorus. The chorus bleeds emotion and soul that makes you have to sit down and think. The mix of the lyrics and his southern accent gives you chills and makes us all swoon. The chorus goes like this :” Blue looks good on the sky Looks good on that neon buzzin’ on the wall But darling, it don’t match your eyes I’m tellin’ you You don’t need that guy It’s so black and white He’s stealin’ your thunder Baby, blue ain’t your color”. He makes you realize that you deserve better and that you should get better. No one should be put down like that, no deserves to have their “thunder stolen”. It makes sense that this song has spent 18 weeks on top. Lovely song Keith Urban lovely song. Quadir Belton, also a student at Academy @ Palumbo, says “I never actually listen to country because it never applied to me but after I listened to this song I might actually get into it. This song is so beautiful and it speaks to me even though he isn't singing to me.”
Finally, the number one soundtrack is……….. The soundtrack for the new Disney princess movie Moana. The soundtrack has been number one since its release in November meaning it has been not only on the chart but number one for 3 weeks now. The original lyrics come from the creator of Hamilton and In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda. This soundtrack tells the story of Moana, the daughter of a Polynesian chief, who goes off to return the heart of the goddess island in hopes of saving her island and her people, while trying to decide if she should accept her fate as the next chief or go off and find out why the ocean calls her. This soundtrack is beautiful and I highly recommend you take a listen.
