By: Helen Ly Philadelphia is a busy city and most people use public transportation to get to their destinations. SEPTA is the most prominent public transportation that people use; there are trains, subways, buses, and trolleys. It is convenient for people to take SEPTA buses because there are numerous of routes to use. However, subways provide own two means of transportation: the Market Frankford Line and the Broad Street Line. Those two lines are used everyday for city people, but would it be better if the city of Philadelphia constructed more lines for greater access? The construction of more lines could make Philadelphia better because those who want access to SEPTA's subways will be given that. In New York City, there is a vast network of subway lines; one could hop the station in upper Manhattan and get downtown or go to Soho. For a New Yorker, that is very accessible; possibly the same could happen to Philadelphia. Some students in Academy at Palumbo disapprove of the idea because of how small Philadelphia is and the complications along with it. Rameen Johnson, a junior at Palumbo said, "I think it's better simplified. It's too confusing in New York CIty." Previously, there were talks of expanding the lines, but nothing further has been discussed. Besides talks of the expansion of SEPTA, there are others way to advance the transportation system. There are plans to change the payment system of taking SEPTA with SEPTA Key. SEPTA Key is similar to a Metrocard used in New York City in which the card can be rechargeable to add more money. Thus, the use of tokens and transfers will be replaced. The idea has been created since 2008 and SEPTA hopes to implement the SEPTA Key in the near future, but plans have been halted due to complications. They want the technology to be as its best because having errors could cause distrust in people. Also, it would be a big transition since there are many places that use the token method, so it would be difficult to replace it. However, they hope that things go well because it will help improve the public transportation like other cities have done. SEPTA is necessary for the city of Philadelphia because it is used by so many people. It does not hurt to think of new ways to improve it like expanding it or changing the fare system. It only makes it better if it is well thought out.
