The Rocky Steps, cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell have one thing in common; it can be found in Philadelphia, PA. Lonely Planet declared that Philadelphia was the best place to visit in the United States for 2016, reaching number one in its top ten list. This is a pretty esteemed title for Philadelphia since it is named by Lonely Planet. Lonely Planet is a travel website that guides travelers with information on what destinations to travel to and other important details so giving Philadelphia first place is venerable.
Philadelphia has a lot of rich history from the Betsy Ross House to the writings of the Constitution. The history in Philadelphia stays genuine and fun with people playing historical characters around Independence Hall. Not only that, but Lonely Planet gives praise to Philadelphia’s eclectic range of cuisines and the affordable prices the city offers. Cuisines in Philly are full of variety with Indian, Italian, French, and American food. Since it is named the best place to visit, I went around and asked Philadelphians what they thought was the best thing about.
Students at Palumbo mostly said it is the history that attracts tourists to Philadelphia. Others said, “6 community in tkmhe city of Philadelphia. Addmo p itionally.
one said the accessibility in Philadelphia is great because it is easy to get around the city so it feels like you’re getting the feel for everything.
Lastly, itmes to a shock for Philadelphian that it is the number one in the list because they assumed that New York would be in it. However, a junior, Jenny Ni, said, “Philly has definitely renovated..opened up city hall Dilworth Park, Winterfest and Summerfest..new shops on Walnut and Chestnut.” The renovations that Philadelphia has went through, it makes sense as to why people are drawn to the city. With all that said, we can see why people are attracted to Philadelphia with its culture, food, history, and accessibility.
If you’re interested in the other places that made the list, here’s the website to Lonely Planet. Be sure to watch the video on Philadelphia, the visuals are fantastic.

Having school days off is something students cherish during the school year. In 2015, New York City officially announced that students will be given two days off on Muslim holidays, specifically, Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) and Eid al - Fitr (end of Ramadan). The people of New York see the change as a positive effect because Muslim families are a part of the community and it is respectful to think of them.
Besides New York, other places are considering the idea as well, such as Philadelphia. The city plans to discuss the idea about having the days off. With this recent change, it brings to my attention the positivity for Muslim communities. With the rise of Islamophobia, it is nice to see that people are willing to accept the holidays as something special rather than associate Islam to terrorism. I asked a couple of people about what they thought of the idea of having a day off for a Muslim holiday. Hunter Mckee, a junior at Palumbo, loves the idea of acknowledging Muslim holidays, she said, "They celebrate Jewish and Catholic holidays, " so she feels that it's nice to have the open mindedness. Andrew Ly, a senior at Roman Catholic High school thinks that it's really cool. He said, " It's cool that public schools are doing that because coming from a school that is Catholic, I like that the school district celebrates a lot of religious holidays."
Overall, students are glad about the subject being brought up and for those who have a misconception about Islam; it is not a religion about war and terror, for it is about peace. Hopefully, having the day off for a Muslim holiday will help people see that Islam is a peaceful religion.

With 2015 coming to an end, it's time to look back at the best things that happened in Philadelphia and sadly, the worst things that happened in 2015. I would say that the best thing to happen was the pope coming to Philly. For students, they had a break from school due to the numerous of people coming to see the Pope. People from different countries came to Philadelphia to see the pope and hear his profound words. People brought their babies to be kissed by the Pope and one of them was Giavanna, a baby girl who is suffering from a brain tumor. After the kiss, her tumor significantly decreased; “It was virtually invisible.”
For students, it was relaxing for them to have a couple of days off. Also, it was rare for the Ben Franklin Bridge to be free of cars, so it was nice for people to walk on it and ride their bikes. Although some people didn't like it because of the roads closing, everyone was happy about the pope's visit. Personally, it felt like the pope brought the people of Philadelphia together. It felt as if people's differences were put aside for a couple of days and we all got along and as Alex Monteiro said, “It brought the city of Philadelphia closer”.
Another momentous event in Philadelphia was the protest for Black Lives Matter. With the incidents in Baltimore, the people of Philadelphia felt it was time to take a stand and protest peacefully. I would say that it was a good thing because people were raising awareness about black lives and it was a peaceful protest.
The worst thing to happen in Philadelphia is the pork incident in a mosque. With all the events about terrorists occurring outside of Philly such as the San Bernardino attack and Paris, it's sad that there is people out there who exacerbate the problem. After those two horrific events, someone in a red pick up truck threw a pig’s head at a mosque in Philly. In Muslim culture, Muslims are not allowed to eat pork which makes it an offense to Arab Americans. Obviously, terrorism is a big issue in society right now, but people should understand what terrorism means, not by their faces, ethnicities or religion.
Finally, I think that the elections on November 3rd for mayor and judges was a good thing to happen because new faces in government positions can possibly help make Philadelphia great. We now have Jim Kenney as our mayor; prior, it was Michael Nutter, so I hope to see him do great things for Philadelphia.
The past is behind us now and it is time to look onward for the future of 2016. 2016 is a new year with with new discoveries. I hope that things look good for Philadelphia and that we can make the new year a good year. Jordan McKinney, a junior at Academy at Palumbo, hopes that “the economy will improve for the sake of society,” and “there will be less terror attacks”. It is going to be new year, so let’s hope for the a better year in 2016.

There is a great opportunity for the Academy at Palumbo students who want to help police officers. The program, Policing for a More Perfect Union is need of students who want to take part in helping officers in training. The program was created by the Police Commissioner, Charles Ramsey, to help police officers understand their rights and the restrictions of it. They learn how important it is to protect people's rights.
You, as a youth, can have the responsibility to communicate to officers about crucial issues that are occurring around the Philadelphia area or even nationally. As Mr. Paul, an English and Journalism teacher, puts it, " The program is suppose to bridge the gap between the youth in Philadelphia and new police recruits." Past news such as the Baltimore riots has greatly shown issues occurring between civilians and police officers. There seems to be a disconnection between youths and police officers because some youths don't feel safe around officers. This program can help mend the issue by coalescing students and police officers to discuss on how the officers can improve Philadelphia and make it a safer environment.
With a group of high school students, you get to converse with police recruits by expressing your opinions about how officers can become venerable officers or any problem in Philadelphia that you wish to address. You get to "[facilitate challenging discussions about real world issues with a diverse group of officers." (Moses, 2015). The program takes place in the National Constitution Center and students who want to join, can leave school and discuss important topics with the officers. After it, you return to school and continue on with your classes. By voicing your opinions, you can make a difference because you'll be in control of how the police will do their duties in the future. You'll get the chance to interact with police officers who want to hear how they, as officers, can turn Philadelphia into a place where youths aren't afraid of officers rather they feel protected by them. Besides addressing the relationship between the youth and officers, the program hopes to create "a stronger and more positive relationship between civilians and the police." (Moses, 2015).
There are many benefits in joining the program. You get to talk to the police department and the workers at the National Constitution Center. It would be a great activity to add to your resume and you'll be surrounded in a positive community where controversial topics can be discussed. The conversations can help provide better communication with officers which can positively impact Philadelphia. If you are interested, you can get in touch with Mr. Paul and tell him about your interest in joining Policing for a More Perfect Union.
