ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. This organization has many operations within its tight community. They have been reported around the world many times. Recently they are trying to gain entrance into Europe. On a report Abu Walid was called by a man he didn’t know and the man asked if Abu could transfer 25 of his people from Libya to Europe for $40,000. Abu knew it was ISIS and reported it. ISIS is trying to get into Europe because Libya is getting chaotic and is a failed state to them. Reasons why ISIS is in control of multiple areas is because security forces lack the motivation to keep up a good fight in some areas. In 2014, the CIA reported that there are 30,000 ISIS out there and growing. ISIS is within all countries, reported by Nicholas Rasmussen, Director of National Counterterrorism Center. People from 90 different countries travel to Syria to fight in one group or another.
A long duration of the time, ISIS had controlled on the outskirts of Fallujah. The first city to be undercontrolled by ISIS was in January 2014. Iraqi government has again taken control of the city. Alaa Abdulrahman who was interviewed by NBC said that 40 ISIS militants has left his village, north of Fallujah.
As there is fear of ISIS trying to get back into the city, Iraqi forces has surrounded Fallujah from all directions. The operation to retake Fallujah was supported with airstrikes by the United States. Before the operation, the price to leave Fallujah from ISIS was $5,000. As ISIS found out the Iraqi militants were coming closer, they lowered the price to $2,500. Within that time, 600 people have left, and roughly 100 families. There is still about 75,000 people in Fallujah as Iraqi militants advance and clear the city, area by area. To the families that cannot leave, Iraqi soldiers has advised them to wave white flags. The army is also asking civilians to leave area in routes that they will secure later.
Fail al-Essawi, Deputy District council chairman said there will be three corridors for civilians to flee safely to the west. The tactic that ISIS is using is that they are dressing as Iraqi militants and killing civilians. ISIS has also laid many IEDs on routes around the city. Iraqi army is sweeping the city with 20,000 soldiers while there is only 800 to 1,000 ISIS within the city.
The United States and Iraq has seized the city before but the major question behind the government’s mind is if they can create stability within the city to prevent ISIS from controlling the region. ISIS is a major threat to the United States because they preach to their supporters in the US to create mass destruction. Just in the beginning of 2015, US authorities arrested a man in Ohio who was reported to be affiliated to ISIS and planned to bomb the US capitol.
